Латинское название «литопс» означает «камню<sup><em>lithos</em></sup> подобный<sup><em>opsis</em></sup>».</p><p>На побеге всегда только 2 листа. Каждый год литопс «линяет» — из серединки вылезают 2 новых листа, а 2 старых усыхают и сползают, как шкурка. Иногда они и ветвятся, но происходит это редко. По мере разрастания колючей братвы мне стала нравиться эта черта аизооновых: они всегда остаются миниатюрными, не то что кактусы, хаворции или каланхои — берёшь малявку, а она через несколько лет становится размером с лошадь… или с ипподром (а лоджия-то не резиновая). Latin name <em>Lithops</em> means “looking like<sup><em>opsis</em></sup> a stone<sup><em>lithos</em></sup>” (see a picture below).</p><p>The plant always has only 2 leaves. Every year Lithops “changes the skin”: 2 new leaves come out from the middle, while 2 old leaves dry out and shrink. Sometimes the plant branches (gives another pair of leaves aside), but that does not happen often. While my prickly gang grew larger I started to like this feature of the living stones' family: they stay miniature, unlike many cacti, haworthias and kalanchoes, who often grow from a small offshoot into something horse-sized.. or race-track-sized (while my house does not grow at all).
